Marvel 1602: Spider-Man (Premiere)

Marvel 1602: Spider-Man - Jeff Parker, Ramon Rosanas Spider-Man, Spider-Man does whatever a- Or is that Ye old Spider-Man, Ye old Spider-Man? I’m not funny. I know this. But I try. My poor attempts at humor aside I have read the original Marvel 1602 so I was fully aware of what kind of world I was in for. Pair that with the fact I thoroughly enjoy Spider-Man this was easily a smart purchase in the enjoyment area.

The story itself follows Peter (otherwise known as the Spider) starts his life in the new world. But very soon as if with these things life goes off track. Familiar villains and friends alike are once again introduced in different ways. Some with different forms. And as is with the original Marvel 1602 there are many references to more modern era storylines. I spied a particularly funny one to me to do with the Venom saga.

This collection is a good read and I would say worth your time and your money.

Ex-mas

Ex-mas - Kate Brian It’s beginning to look a lot like… not Christmas because it’s August. But there’s Christmas in this book so it seemed like a good opening. My silliness aside time for the review.

Our main character Lila is a seventeen year old girl deep into the high school social ladder scene. Right off the bat she’s not really a likeable character at this point. But expect character growth. Lila is hoping to hold the biggest holiday party while her parents are gone on a short trip.

Her plans however are ruined by her little brother, Cooper, who tattles on her. In retaliation Lila does a play out of the “Things not to do to your younger sibling” book. She plants the idea in Cooper’s head that Santa Claus is in trouble due to global warming.

When Cooper and his best friend who happens to be the little brother of Lila’s ex-boyfriend, run away to head to the North Pole Lila and her ex-boyfriend Beau must go after them.

To be honest while Lila is certainly not entirely in the right I did find Beau to be slightly judgmental. While I’m nothing like the popular, girly type I didn’t find the need for Beau to be so judgmental of Lila’s friends. But this is only opinion. And despite the judging Beau is a good guy.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Volume 2

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Volume 2 (My Little Pony - Heather Nuhfer, Amy Mebberson Dear Princess Celestia- I mean readers. I will attempt to hold my fandom gushing back for this review. If you haven’t guessed from the opening sentence I’m a pony fan. I find it to be a fun show and while some of the fandom can go overboard there are really fun and sweet people in the fandom.

That said I will try to keep this a fan girl squeeing free review.

This volume is the collection of the comics that dealt with the arc with the bitterness and anger that fueled Nightmare Moon. After causing nightmares to the ponies of Ponyville (Rainbow’s Dash’s nightmare was painful to see by the way.) this force kidnaps one of the ponies.

With the help of Luna the remaining ponies must go to the moon to save their friend. However they are too late to prevent the force behind Nightmare Moon from enacting its plan. Now to save their friend they must use the power of friendship without the help of the elements of harmony.

A fun little thing about the comics is studying some of the panels you find cute or funny little things added. Like the Gravity Falls cameo in on panel. See if you can spot it. You can certainly tell the artist enjoyed their work on this project.

DC Super-Pets Character Encyclopedia

DC Super-Pets Character Encylopedia - Steven Kortae, Steve Korte, Donald B. Lemke, Art Baltazar As someone who loves superheroes and animals I knew I had to check out this book. I may not be as informed as some comic lovers but I find myself fairly knowledgeable. Either way, I gave this book a read and while it’s not geared to my age group I did enjoy it.

I’m not entirely sure but I believe this guide is geared towards fans of the Tiny Titans comic book series. That series itself is light hearted with its adorably drawn style and cute jokes. Some of the jokes are even fun little throw backs to their normal canons.

That said this book covers the pets of these super heroes and super villains. Honestly I wasn’t aware there were that many. Granted I know some of the more obscure ones ( Do I get points for knowing Wonder Woman had a kangaroo like animal named Jumpa?) but there are still a lot more super pets then I expected.

My expectations aside besides the adorable art style I like how the information is set up. The set up includes a main picture of the character with some attributes pointed out about the character. Most times there will be stats though for some stats can be shorter. Most likely because the characters in question didn’t have as much information in comics background.

Some of the pets made me laugh. Not for the sheer ridiculousness of some of the pets but rather from the naming or themes. Granted children aren’t going to get the joke about Raven’s pet being named Lenore but it’s still funny. And I had a good chuckle at Thud’s entry by the way. It was amusing.

Born to Blog: Building Your Blog for Personal and Business Success One Post at a Time

Born to Blog: Building Your Blog for Personal and Business Success One Post at a Time - Mark Schaefer, Stanford Smith People blog for many reasons. Some like me just enjoy sharing their opinions. Ask my family how much I like to share my opinions. Also like me some people have a lot of time on their hands. Please don’t ask my family about that one.
Another good reason why people blog is to help create or supplement a business. This book is mainly for that set of people. With chapters on good company blogs for example.
There is good advice for the non-business group here though. So I wouldn’t say skip this book entirely if you aren’t in for business. If anything I think it’s certainly worth a read by any blogger. Admittedly the business group will get more out of some chapters then others. But as a small time blogger myself I did find some good advice that I will be taking for the future.
An informative read that isn’t bogged down by too much business or tech talk.

Superheroes

Superheroes - Kelly Link, Peter S. Beagle, Rich Horton I do love me some superheros. Granted I can’t tell you which Robin was which in what order, or name off every villain in the Marvel universe. But I do enjoy the occasional graphic novel reading or superhero movie. So I was really glad to get to read this collection. But will the review be good? How will Batman get rid of that bomb? What will Hulk smash today?
Ahem. Sorry about that. Seriously though, the review.
This collection of short stories was gathered together with the theme of superheroes in mind. A theme which scores instant points with me. The fact some of the stories are written by well-known writers (Peter S Beagle of “The Last Unicorn” fame for example.) only serve to give it more points.
In the end, what is the score? Read on gentle reader.
I enjoyed this collection so much. I’ll admit in many collections there is a story or two I will skip if it doesn’t grab my interest. That did not happen here. Every story had interesting characters or an engaging plot to it.
A wonderful collection of Superhero short stories that is indeed worth your time and money. So with that gentle reader I go on to my next book. To the bookmobile!
RATING: 10 out of 10.
A Gentlewoman's Chronicles - Michael Coorlim A fellow book review blogger told me good things about this book. So I admit I went in with good expectations. I am happy to report that I was not disappointed. In a word A Gentlewoman’s Chronicles is fun. Pure exciting fun. To me it felt like it got better and better each story. In fact it’s hard for me to decide my favorite one. And there are just so many reasons to love this collection.
First there is the strong female character in Aldora Fiske. She is a wonderful blend of elegance, intelligence, and fighting know how. She’s a heroine worth reading about. Not that she carries the stories alone. Each story has an interesting and believable villain. Villains with better reasons for what they do then doing things for the sake of evil.
One thing that also pleased me but might not interest everyone was the portrayal Tesla in the first story. What can I say? I’m a bit of a history geek and understand the reasoning of the characterization of Tesla. So kudos to the author for that as well.
I cannot stress how much I enjoyed these stories. My only disappointment was that they were not longer. Thankfully length normally won’t affect my overall judgment. I really do hope to see longer and more stories from this author.
A definite must read.

Pet Whisperer...er...rrr: Book 1 of the "Animals Talk Back" Serial

Pet Whisperer...er...rrr: Book 1 of the "Animals Talk Back" Serial - Carolyn McCray, Ben Hopkin Though this book's pace was a little too quick and not that long, I still enjoyed it. The characters are fun, the humor is good, and if you're a animal lover such as I you'll love the animals (the ferret incident has to be one of my favorite encounters.)

Worth a read for sure.

Dragon's Oath (House of Night)

Dragon's Oath - P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast Let me start by saying that I enjoy the House of Night series dearly. So I was glad to see a novella on the background of Dragon Lankford. And the book serves that purpose. Sadly, besides doing that and a interesting element with a creature in the book I really didn't find this book that great.

Dragon and Anastasia are just not interesting enough to me to carry a novella. Which makes me glad their not main characters in the main series.

If you enjoy House of Night and want to know all about the characters, pick this up. If not, skip it.

Harriet the Spy

Harriet the Spy - Louise Fitzhugh To start off with this is one of my all time favorite childhood books. And though I out of the suggested age group for the book a more recent read still gave me enjoyment.

In a nutshell Harriet the Spy is about a young girl named Harriet who enjoys pretending to be a spy by watching and listening on people secretly and writing her thoughts and observations into her notebook. However this practice cause trouble for her later down the road...

This book is fun, cute, and sometimes downright funny. A must read.
